Fur/Pelt Trapping Value Calculator
Estimate what your pelts might bring across 21 commercially harvested North American fur species, using 2025–26 season average auction prices.
How this calculator works
Per-pelt values are recent reported season averages by species. The grade multiplier reflects the typical gap between top-quality (Grade 1) and lower-quality (Grade 2/3) pelts of the same species and season, based on published grade-differentiated sale results.
Where these numbers come from
- Per-species average pelt values: Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources and Renewables, "Average Value of Wild Fur" (2023–24 season), a systematically tracked government dataset
- Grade 1 vs. Grade 2/3 value differentials: Fur Harvesters Auction (FHA) 2026 market forecast report, which publishes grade-specific per-pound pricing
- Current market volatility context (raccoon, coyote swings): TrappingToday.com 2025 fur market report; Fur Harvesters Auction and Northwest Territories government auction result bulletins
This tool intentionally uses a real, cited dataset rather than an invented one — but fur markets move fast enough that "recent" data can already be stale by the time you read this. Treat this as a ballpark, not a quote.
Frequently asked questions
Why do pelt values swing so much season to season?
Fur auction prices respond to fashion demand, international markets, and the size of that season's harvest across the industry, so average prices can shift meaningfully from one season to the next rather than staying fixed.
Does pelt quality change the value much from the average?
Yes — size, fur density, color, and how well a pelt was handled and prepared after harvest all affect where an individual pelt lands relative to the season average this calculator is based on, so a prime, well-handled pelt can bring notably more than an average one.
Is this calculator useful for setting a price with a buyer?
It's meant as a planning estimate based on recent season averages, not a guaranteed quote — actual prices are set at auction or by individual buyers and can differ from the seasonal average this tool references.
