How this calculator works

Minimum spacing keeps a tree's mature root system and canopy from crowding its neighbor, based on the vigor of its rootstock — dwarf rootstocks need far less room than standard/seedling rootstocks of the same fruit. Pollination requirements are separate: some fruits are self-fertile and don't need a second variety at all, while others need a compatible pollinizer variety blooming at the same time within bee-flying distance.

Where these numbers come from

  • Minimum tree spacing by fruit and size class: Virginia Cooperative Extension, "Tree Fruit" space requirement tables
  • Pollination distance guidance (up to ~500 ft via bee activity): widely consistent horticultural extension guidance

Even self-fertile varieties often produce more and better fruit with a second variety nearby — "doesn't need a pollinizer" isn't the same as "wouldn't benefit from one."

Frequently asked questions

Why does spacing matter beyond just having room to walk between trees?

Proper spacing affects how much light and airflow each tree gets, which influences fruit quality and disease pressure, and it also determines whether nearby trees can actually cross-pollinate each other effectively.

Why do some trees need a separate pollination partner nearby?

Many fruit and nut trees are not self-pollinating and need a compatible variety within a certain distance to set fruit reliably — planting a single tree of one of these varieties alone can mean little to no fruit despite otherwise healthy growth.

Does rootstock affect spacing too?

Yes — a dwarfing rootstock produces a smaller mature tree that can be planted more closely than the same variety grown on standard rootstock, so rootstock choice is worth factoring in alongside variety when planning spacing.
