How finders work

A finder asks a handful of questions about your goals and conditions, scores each option against your answers, and recommends the best fit with a runner-up. Every result links to a full page explaining why it fits, how it compares and what to buy or check next. You can also skip the quiz and open any result page directly from the finder's comparison table.

The three finders

Chicken Breed Finder. Eight questions that match your goals, climate, egg colour and size preferences to one of twelve breeds. It is the right starting point if you are choosing your first flock.

Firewood Species Finder. Matches your burning goals and the wood available to you to one of eight species, comparing heat value, seasoning time and how easy the wood is to split.

Starter Livestock Finder. Compares nine animals, from chickens, ducks and rabbits to dairy goats, honeybees, sheep, pigs, turkeys and guinea fowl, by cost, space and the daily time they take, so your first animals suit your actual life.

How to read a result

A finder result is a recommendation, not a verdict. The "why this fits you" list shows which of your answers drove the match, and the comparison table shows how the runner-up differs. If two results are close, read both pages. The best choice for a beginner is often the one that forgives mistakes, even if another option scores slightly higher on paper.

Limits to keep in mind

Finders simplify. Real decisions also depend on local zoning, your neighbours, your budget and time, and what is available near you. Check local rules on livestock numbers before you buy animals, and confirm any local burn restrictions before you plan around a wood stove. Our how we calculate page explains where the scoring comes from.

Common questions

Do I have to take the quiz?

No. Every result has its own page, and you can open any of them from the finder's comparison table or from the lists on this page.

Can I share my result?

Yes. Each result page has a button that copies a link to that exact result, so you can send it to someone who is deciding with you.

What if I do not like my result?

Retake the quiz and change an answer, or read the runner-up. Finders are a starting point for your own research, not a verdict.
