What HomesteadCalcs is for

Homesteading runs on small calculations: how much feed a flock needs, how long to process a jar at your altitude, how big a well pump should be, how many acres a pair of goats can graze. HomesteadCalcs turns published extension and manufacturer guidance into free tools you can use in a minute, and shows the method behind every number so you can check it. Read more on the about page and see how we calculate.

How to find the right tool

Start with what you are trying to decide. If you are choosing a breed, a firewood species or your first animal, use a finder. If you already keep animals, open Animal Care for feed, dosing, housing and breeding numbers. For the garden and the harvest, Gardening & Food covers planting dates, canning at altitude, maple syrup and storage. Off-Grid & Rural covers wells, power, septic, firewood and equipment, and Maker Tools covers leather, dye, glass, steel and wool. Use the converters when a recipe or recommendation is written in a different product or unit than you have. For a start-to-finish walkthrough, read one of our guides on chickens, the garden year, preserving food, off-grid water and power, or heating with wood.

Estimates, not advice

These tools are planning aids. Dosing, canning, septic, electrical and structural decisions belong with a veterinarian, a tested recipe, a licensed installer and your local authorities. Our disclaimer and safety notes explain where to draw that line. If you spot a mistake, please tell us, or get in touch.
