Backyard Chicken Feed Ration Calculator
Mix your own feed ration to hit the right protein target for your flock's age and purpose — grounded in university extension nutrition data, not a guess.
How this calculator works
This tool uses the Pearson's Square method — the standard way feed mills balance two ingredients to hit a target protein percentage. Given your grain's protein content and your supplement's protein content, it solves for the exact ratio that lands on your target, then scales that ratio to your flock's estimated weekly feed intake.
Where these numbers come from
Protein targets by age and purpose are drawn from University of Maine Cooperative Extension Bulletin #2222 and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System's poultry nutrition guidance. Daily feed intake estimates (used to size your weekly total) come from Extension-published feed consumption tables for small flocks. Ingredient protein percentages (corn, wheat, oats, soybean meal, field peas, sunflower meal, fish meal) reflect standard published feed-composition values.

- Daily/weekly feed intake benchmarks: Poultry Extension (poultry.extension.org), "Feeding Chickens for Egg Production in Small and Backyard Flocks"
This is a starting-point formulation, not a substitute for a complete commercial ration or a consultation with a poultry nutritionist, especially for large or commercial-scale flocks.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Pearson's Square method?
It's the standard feed-mill technique for blending two ingredients of known protein content to hit an exact target percentage — this calculator applies the same math professional feed formulators use, just scaled to a backyard flock.
Why do protein targets change by age and purpose?
Chicks need a higher protein starter ration to support rapid early growth, while layers need comparatively less protein but far more calcium for steady eggshell strength — using one ration for every life stage under- or over-feeds protein at some point.
Is this a complete ration on its own?
Treat it as a starting-point formulation — it balances protein using the ingredients you enter, but a truly complete commercial ration also balances vitamins, minerals, and amino acid profiles that this calculator doesn't cover, so consult a poultry nutritionist for large or commercial flocks.
