How this calculator works

This tool works in whichever direction you need: tell it how much space you have, and it estimates how many plants fit and what you'll likely harvest; or tell it your target harvest weight, and it works backward to the plant count and space required. Both directions use the same per-plant space and typical-yield figures for each crop.

Where these numbers come from

Per-plant spacing and typical seasonal yield figures are averaged from state extension vegetable garden planning guides. Actual yield varies significantly with variety, soil fertility, watering, climate, and growing season length — treat this as a planning estimate, not a guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the yield estimate vary so much by crop?

Different vegetables simply produce very different amounts of food per plant and per square foot — a single tomato plant can yield 10 lb over a season, while a carrot yields a fraction of a pound, so the numbers reflect real differences in productivity, not an error.

Can I use this for square-foot gardening or raised beds?

Yes — the space-needed figures are per-plant square footage, so they work whether you're planning traditional rows or a dense raised-bed layout, though very intensive square-foot spacing can sometimes fit more plants than this conservative estimate.

What if I want to grow for both fresh eating and preserving?

Add your target amounts together first (e.g., fresh eating plus canning) and enter the combined total harvest weight in target-harvest mode to see the total space and plant count needed.
