A worked example

Common mix-ups

  • Fluid ounces measure volume and ounces measure weight. A cup of honey weighs about 12 ounces, even though it is 8 fluid ounces.
  • An imperial pint is 20 imperial fluid ounces, while a US pint is 16 US fluid ounces.
  • Water weighs about 8.34 pounds per US gallon, but other liquids differ. Use the Brix and density converter for sugar solutions.

Where these numbers come from

US customary volumes are defined from the US gallon of 231 cubic inches, which is 3.785411784 litres exactly. The imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres.
